Nessum (formerly HD-PLC) is a forward-looking communication technology that enables high-speed data transmission over existing line infrastructure – whether over power cables, twisted-pair lines, coaxial cables or telephone lines. Based on the international standards IEEE 1901-2020 and ITU-T G.9905, Nessum offers a robust, secure and cost-efficient alternative to conventional network solutions.

As an integration partner, we work together with ECOLINQX and use their proven BRIDGIT™ System-on-Module. This compact, fully integrated communication module forms the centrepiece of our Nessum-based solutions. It acts as a bridge between different line technologies – Ethernet, RS485, power line and coaxial – and makes expensive routers unnecessary.

What Nessum can do

The technology uses the innovative Wavelet-OFDM modulation method, which ensures reliable communication even under difficult conditions with high interference levels, interferences and cable attenuation. With transmission rates of up to 240 Mbps, a range of several kilometres through multi-hop technology and support for up to 1024 network nodes, Nessum is ideally suited for demanding industrial applications, building automation, smart grids and IoT projects.

Smart Grid Applications

NESSUM uses the existing power infrastructure as a communication medium. Signals are transmitted directly over the mains line without the need for additional cabling or wireless connections. For smart grid applications, this represents a decisive advantage: wherever electricity flows, communication is also possible.

The technology enables the networking of generators, consumers and storage systems into a coordinated system. Inverters from PV systems, charging stations for electric vehicles, heat pumps and battery storage systems exchange information and respond to grid conditions.

Thanks to real-time capable communication, consumers can be specifically controlled. During overproduction from renewable sources, flexible loads can be connected. During bottlenecks, a prioritised reduction takes place. This dynamic load management stabilises the grid and reduces the need for costly grid expansions.

We first analyse your requirements and develop an integration concept. In doing so, we take into account both the electrical boundary conditions of your application and the required communication parameters such as range, data rate and interference immunity.

We are happy to take over the circuit design for coupling to your existing electronics, the selection of suitable coupling networks as well as the EMC-compliant layout design. In firmware development, we implement the NESSUM command set on your target platform and integrate the communication interfaces seamlessly into your existing software architecture.

Testing

The reliable function of NESSUM-based devices requires comprehensive testing under realistic conditions.

CORESIGHT has the know-how and infrastructure to systematically validate your NESSUM communication solution. In the laboratory, we simulate typical application scenarios and edge cases, such as communication over long line distances, coexistence with other network participants as well as the influence of switched-mode power supplies, motor loads and other interference sources.
